Intermediate Care Area Nursing Course

Intermediate Care Area (ICA) nursing deal with complex conditions and medically unstable patients. Thus, Intermediate Care Area nurses are often in high stress situations, which demands complex assessments, intensity patient treatment and continuous vigilance.
This course aims to equip nurses with the essential knowledge and skills to deliver care effectively and efficiently in the Intermediate Care Area, so as to provide safe, holistic and quality care to patients.
At this course, participants will learn to:
Discuss the role and responsibilities of Registered Nurses in the ICA
Discuss the nursing management of patient with pneumonia, status asthmaticus and chronic obstructive lung diseases
Discuss the nursing care of patient with respiratory support devices and artificial airway
Discuss the nursing care of patient with intra - pleural drainage
Outline the essential respiratory assessment and monitoring of patient in ICA
Demonstrate the ability to interpret arterial blood gases result
Discuss the nursing management of patient with acute myocardial infarction and cardiac failure
Discuss the importance of haemodynamic monitoring
Explain the basic principles in continuous ECG monitoring
Recognize the basic arrhythmias in ECG
Discuss the nursing management of patient with head trauma, stroke, diabetic insipidus and increased intracranial pressure
Discuss the nursing management of shock, diabetic ketoacidosis and upper bleeding gastrointestinal tract
Discuss the nursing care of patient with access for renal therapies
Discuss the specific post-operative care of patient in ICA
Discuss the nursing role and responsibility during resuscitation
Outline the nutritional management of patient in ICA
Outline the pain management of patient in ICA
Discuss the nursing responsibility in the use of inotropic and sedative drugs and neuromuscular blocking agents
State the infection control issues in ICA
Demonstrate the ability in:
