Resident Nurse Training Programme

The Resident Nurse Training Programme is designed for Registered Nurses who will be taking on the expanded role to perform complex care on patients.

The aim of the course is to enable nurses to perform health examinations, collect and document data, conduct approved procedures, order laboratory studies, provide consistent, up-to-date and holistic care according to stipulated "Resident Nurse Clinical Guidelines" of the respective disciplines more effectively and efficiently.


At this course, participants will learn to:

  • Provide direct clinical services for selective group of patients according to established departmental guidelines in collaboration with the supervising physicians.
  • Apply critical thinking skills, diagnostic reasoning skills and innovations in the integration of nursing care of selective group of patients.
  • Perform history taking, physical examination and assessment of patients; document findings and plan of care either in the Coordinated Clinical Pathway (CCP) or Patient's Record daily and accurately.
  • Perform clinical round with physician in charge daily.
  • Conduct initial post-operative review.
  • Initiate referral to allied health professionals and specialty nurses in collaboration with primary physician.
  • Perform and interpret ECG as first responder.
  • Interpret laboratory results accurately.
  • Counsel patient and family on health behaviors modification and reinforcement of plan of care.
  • Perform and review dressing plan for wound management.
  • Perform procedures as stated in core and specific competencies.
  • Conduct effective communication with others health care providers, patients & relatives.
  • Initiate health education and discharge planning to patient/families/caregivers.


Target Audience

  • Registered Nurses have at least 3 years of post-registration experience with at least 2 years of work experience in the relevant specialty.

  • Completed an approved Post Basic Certificate or Advanced Diploma in a relevant nursing specialty.

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing is preferred.
