Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
In this programme, participants will gain experience in managing patients with plastic reconstructive surgery and subspecialised surgery, eg cleft lip/palate surgery, craniofacial surgery, head and neck reconstructive surgery, mastectomy with breast reconstruction, burns surgery, microvascular and aesthetic surgery.
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a specialised surgical unit dealing with specific reconstructive and aesthetic problems. It provides services for congenital abnormalities, head and neck cancer, reconstructive microsurgery, cranio-maxillofacial surgery and trauma.
It also provides a 24 hours' service to adult and paediatric patients admitted for plastic and reconstructive surgery. It is also a centre for referrals within the hospital as well as from private/public hospitals in Singapore and region.
Located at Block 6 Level 3, the ward is managed by a senior nurse manager and supported by a team of highly skilled and experienced doctors and nurse clinicians. The nursing team provides a total nursing care to patients after reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. They also provide education and counselling to patients and parents of paediatric patients with congenital deformities eg cleft lip/palate pre- and post-operatively.
At the clinical attachment, participants will learn:
Pathophysiology related to conditions requiring plastic reconstructive surgery, e.g. cleft and craniofacial surgery, reconstructive surgery after trauma and cancer
Pre- ad post-operative nursing management
Psychosocial support to patients and their families
Principles of managing a Plastic or Surgical ward
Target Audience
Registered nurses with 1 year post-registration experience (minimum) in a surgical or plastic surgical ward
Currently working in a Plastic or Surgical ward
