Breast Care

The experience will enable participants to gain indepth knowledge in managing patients with breast cancer.


Breast Care Service is offered by the Department of General Surgery. It offers breast screening programme, mammogram localisation service, Breast Counselling and Breast Cancer Management.


Breast Care Nursing first started in Singapore in 1992 at the Singapore General Hospital. The team consists of breast care nurse clinician, surgeon, medical oncologist, radiologist, physiotherapist and occupational therapist.


The team organises educational programme in English and Mandarin language for breast cancer patients and their relatives, every Wednesday of the month. They also provide information to mastectomy patients on external breast prosthesis and breast reconstruction.


The Breast Care Nurse Clinician facilitates the support group to provide updated knowledge on breast cancer and post-mastectomy rehabilitation with assistance from nurses and ex-mastectomy patients. She also provides palliative care, psychological and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their relatives.


At the clinical attachment, participants will learn:

  • Pre-operative counselling

  • Pre- and post-operative care (include complications ie lymphoedema)

  • Use of external breast prothesis for mastectomy patients

  • Referrals to support services ie hospice

  • Education on Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening to patients and family members

  • Role of Breast Care Nurse Clinician


Target Audience

  • Registered nurses with at least 3 years of post-registration experience

  • Currently working in a surgical ward with breast cancer patients
