Pain Management
The Pain Management Service is a subspecialty of the Department of Anaesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care. It provides acute pain service (pre and post-operative pain management) and pain clinic (cancer and chronic pain management). The Pain Management Nurse Clinician counsels and educates patients with post-operative and cancer pain. He/ She also provides training opportunities, courses and inservices for nurses in the development of their knowledge and skills on pain management.
This attachment will provide participants with knowledge and skills in managing patients with post-operative pain.
At the clinical attachment, participants will learn:
Concept of pain
Factors affecting pain perception, assessment and management of post-operative pain
Assessment of pain - various tools
Setting goals and judging effectiveness of pain management
Pharmacological and non-pharmacological modalities of pain treatment
Delivery pumps for pain management - set up, use, safety and nursing care
Target Audience
Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of post-registration experience
Currently working in a clinical areas
