Burns Nursing
Participants will undergo the attachment programme at the burns ward, which is also the regional referral centre for thermal injuries. They will gain experience in managing patients with a variety of thermal injuries.
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery / Burns provides services for burns: National Registry / Resource Centre, Major Burns Disaster Management, Skin Bank and Skin Culture Laboratory, Burns SOC, Keloids and Hypertrophic Scar Clinic and Post Burns Reconstruction.
The Burns Centre in the Singapore General Hospital was commissioned in 1981. It is the only centre in Singapore catering for the management of patients with thermal injuries in and around the ASEAN region.
The self contained and compartmentalised Centre is located in Block 4 Level 3. It has an Operation Theatre, Occupational cum Physiotherapy Room and Intensive Care Rooms.
The Centre is managed by a senior nursing manager supported by a team of experienced and skilled nurse clinicians and nurses.
At the clinical attachment, participants will learn:
Classification of burn
Assessment of burn
Provision of specific care including nutritional support, infection control, burns wound management, psychosocial support, pain management and discharge advice
Burns resuscitation regime
Procedures for managing a major catastrophe involving thermal injuries
Nursing management of a Burns Ward
