Gerontology Nursing Course

This programme aims to provide registered nurses with the essential knowledge and skills in nursing management of elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities and also empower nurses to participate actively in discharge planning of elderly patients.

This course is organised by SingHealth Alice Lee Institute of Advanced Nursing.

Course Outline:

Upon completion of this programme, the participants should be able to:

Understand the impact of age related physical and physiologic changes to pathology
Explain the management of elderly patients with dementia, delirium and depression
Outline Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)
Discuss the management of incontinence and constipation
Discuss the role of nurses in fall prevention
Understand the concepts of frality
Discuss the assessment of pain in elderly with cognitive disorders
Discuss the implications of polypharmacy
Explain the importance of adequate nutrition and hydration in elderly
Discuss the available common community resources and grant for older adults with disablity
Explain the importance of home safety for older adult
