Basic Point-of-Care Ultrasound Workshop

This workshop introduces doctors to the basic principles and practice of ultrasound for common clinical scenarios, laying the foundation for using point of care ultrasound in daily clinical practice. These skills are not specifically covered during medical school nor often are there opportunities for these skills to be demonstrated and practiced. Thus there is a need to provide an environment where such techniques and skills can be learned through a structured curriculum.

The workshop faculty comprises a selected group of emergency physicians, each with a wide range of knowledge and experience in teaching. SSSC has trained more than 40 trainees in this workshop each year.

Course Objective

The aim of this workshop is to provide a structured curriculum to teach the basic ultrasound techniques and to instill in the trainees the best practices at the beginning of their point-of-care ultrasound training.

At the end of the workshop, trainees will have an understanding of ultrasound physics, knobology and basic skills to perform and interpret the ultrasound images. Trainees will also learn the application of ultrasound techniques in various body systems, as well as in the insertion of central venous lines.

Target Audience

This workshop is strongly recommended as a mandatory programme for R1/R2 residents in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Anaesthesiology, General Surgery & Surgical Specialties (Hand Surgery, Plastic and Urology), Orthopaedics and Family Medicine programmes. It is also recommended for House Officers, Medical Officers, Clinicians and General Practitioners who seek to equip themselves with the basic ultrasound techniques.
